Sunday morning I preached from Amos 1 about the Sanctity of Human Life.
One issue that God spoke against in this passage (which may have seemed odd for our modern day and time) was human slavery. Against Gaza and Edom God said that they would be judged because they “deported an entire population”. The word “entire” could also be translated from Hebrew as “peaceful”. That is, they kidnapped the “peaceful population” – i.e. elderly, women, children, and babies not just the enemy combatants.
We often think of human slavery as an issue of the past but Sunday I highlighted the fact that, even today, millions of people are currently enslaved around the globe. Heartbreakingly enough, hundreds of thousands of them are children.
Interestingly enough, MSNBC re-ran a news story on Sunday afternoon (originally from 2005) entitled “Children for Sale”. This investigative report looked into……the child sex slave trade in Cambodia. There are an estimated 30,000 children in Cambodia’s child trafficking industry.
Then Secretary of State Colin Powell was leading the administrations efforts to expose and dismantle this outrageous child trafficking. Powell’s comments in the story were dead on. Of the child sex slave trade, Powell said,
“…it’s the worst kind of human exploitation imaginable. Can you imagine young children, learning their ABCs or whatever the equivalent is in their language, being used as sexual slaves for predators? It is a sin against humanity, and it is a horrendous crime.”
Powell was exactly right – it is a “sin against humanity”. We ought to pray and work towards the end of such atrocities. Proverbs 31:8-9 tells us, we ought to
“Speak up for those who have no voice, for the justice of all who are dispossessed. Speak up, judge righteously, and defend the cause of the oppressed and needy.”
